Advanced Genomics Laboratory

Advanced Genomics Laboratory research focuses on the application of next-generation sequencing to tackle major questions in biology, medicine, and health. Most of our projects are connected to translational medicine seeking precise diagnoses, refine therapies, and thus improve treatments and quality of life for people affected by different diseases.

The lab is always working on implementing new applications of next-generation sequencing technologies, developing protocol and testing, and automation protocols. We have established an effective system to generate the highest quality data, maintain a rapid sample turnaround times and provide a cost-effective sequencing and bioinformatics analysis to local colleagues and external investigators. We support in the preparation of the sample, in the management of large amounts of information efficiently, analysis bioinformatics and we realize personalized advice in the elaboration of genomics projects.


Carolina Sánchez, PhD is a professor at the Universidad Mayor and the Head of DNA Sequencing Core of the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics. She works together with Genoma Mayor delivering genomics and bioinformatics services for local researchers, public or private institutions of Chile and Latin America based on Next Generation Sequencing technologies. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Universidad de Santiago, Chile and her PhD in Biotechnology from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso y Universidad Federico Santa Maria, Chile.

The skills and expertise she has developed over the years are now applied to the development and the adaption of new technologies for Next-Generation sequencing routines and other applications. She was also a key contributor of published draft genomes of various organisms and she participates in the Maqui Genome Projects.

Currently, Dr. Sánchez’s research focuses on the application of next generation sequencing to medicine genomic using these data to support therapeutic decision making. In addition to this, she is in charge of the managing and running the Latin America first clinical trial using next generation sequencing for characterizing lung cancer samples for Pfizer's Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine.
